An event to retrace the design activity of the great architect starting from its beating heart: Cuba
An event to retrace the design activity of the great architect starting from its beating heart: Cuba
Indeed, the Caribbean island saw Vittorio Garatti become one of the founders of the Institute of Physical Planning and the co-creator of the first town plan of Revolutionary Cuba.
Together with architect Sergio Baroni, he won the competition for the building of the Cuban Pavilion at the Montreal World Fair in Canada in 1967. In the same year he designed, with the technical advice of engineer Jose “Moro” Morales”, the Andrèe Voisin Agriculture and Fertiliser school of Güines, in the countryside south of Havana, namely the first and only Cuban example of a building prefabricated on site.
Together with Roberto Gottardi, he created that which is considered the most important piece of modern architecture ever made in Cuba, which many deem the only true “architecture of Revolution”, namely the National Art Schools for the Third World.
The Art Schools were paramount not only for their compositional uniqueness and the peculiar process that led to their creation, but most of all because they introduced an innovative teaching method based on the total integration of the various artistic disciplines.
