There is no unequivocal definition of the Mediterranean: it is a broad concept, with multiple facets, while the recent Middle Eastern conflicts have further accentuated this fragmentary nature.
The case of Libya and in particular Tripoli, a Mediterranean city with a composite urban structure described by Ludovico Micara, professor of Architectural and Urban Composition and author of the book Tripoli medina mediterranea is to be seen and studied within this context.
Tripoli, more than others, has been a centre of exchange and combinations that have given rise to conflicting contaminations of idioms, styles and social groups.
This process of transformation towards a metropolitan and global dimension has created discontinuity with the existing urban fabric and at the same time has forced the city to confront its landscape and its geography: The great void of the desert behind it and the sea in front.
