After the earthquake in central Italy on 24 August 2016, the editorial staff of the weekly magazine Donna Moderna followed the people and places of the earthquake for one year.

If everyone has a pencil, few are the real poets, says Elliott Erwitt. If everyone can take a “beautiful” photo, few can make good photos articulated in a coherent photographic project. It is indeed the strength of the project to identify the real photographic works; a project is characterised by the quality of the idea, the ability to articulate it, develop it in depth, and communicate it. In the 2019 edition of The Histories of Photography cycle, we will tackle four different ways to create, study, complete, and disseminate a photographic project examined through concrete “case histories”, from exploring the Italian photographic landscape to investigating a nation through a series of portraits, to the commitment to tell an emergency like that of the earthquake, up to what it means to visually tell about the wars of our time.

Earthquake. Three years after
with Giovanna Calvenzi, Luca Pitoni and Alessandro Scotti

After the earthquake in central Italy on 24 August 2016, the editorial staff of the weekly magazine  “Donna Moderna” decided to follow the people and the places of the earthquake for one year. Once a month the photo journalist Alessandro Scotti went to Amatrice, Arquata del Tronto, Accumoli, Tolentino … to create “#Ricominciamo” (let us start again), 54 photoshoots for the online magazine and 12 for the hardcopy magazine. Later on Giacomo Traldi made a 12-minute video on the event and the entire editorial staff collaborated in publishing a book edited by Electa.

Giovanna Calvenzi: after teching the history of photography for eleven years, since 1985 she is a photo-editor and has collaborated with several Italian periodicals. In 1998, she was artistic director of the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles and in 2014 artistic delegate of the Mois de la Photo in Paris. She teaches photo-editing and carries out an intense study activity on contemporary photography.

Luca Pitoni: graphic designer and professional journalist specialised in editorial design. He has designed magazines for major Italian publishers, receiving numerous awards. He is currently the Creative Director for Donna Moderna. In 2017, he founded the graphic design firm TOMO TOMO together with Davide Di Gennaro. He is an editorial design lecturer at the Polytechnic Institute of Milan and Isia in Urbino. tomotomo.it

Alessandro Scotti: Italian author and photographer. He has produced reports and articles from over thirty countries in the world. In July 2005, the UN Secretary-General appointed him Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The honorary title is conferred by the United Nations to “recognised talents in the world of arts, science, literature, entertainment, sports, or other fields of public and cultural life (…) who make an influence beyond national boarders”. His work has been exhibited in museums and institutions.
