The Histories of Art.On the principles of philosophical composition | Seminar with Stefano Velotti

MAXXI Auditorium – admittance €5.00; admittance to 5 seminars €20.00; free for myMAXXI card holders. The purchase of a ticket allows for reduced price museum entrance (€8.00) within one week of issue.

Five seminars with international philosophers, composers, artists, choreographers and writers to explore and comprehend the expressive idioms of contemporary creativity.

In the first seminar, taking as a starting point the text The Philosophy of Composition by Edgar Allan Poe, the discussion focuses on the initial conditions of the exercise of thought in relation to artistic modes of composition and the many current ways of life that appear to be marked by a “dialectic of control”: ways of life in which we all – philosophers and otherwise – are immersed and which philosophy in its own way must attempt to comprehend. This kind of “squaring of the page” is in effect the principle underlying every compositional exercise using any idiom.

Stefano Velotti teaches Aesthetics at the Sapienza University of Rome and taught at length in the United States.
