On Rome, Paolini wrote «I seem to feel hatred and yet I write verses filled with punctual love».

It is in the wake of this sentiment that Paolo Portoghesi reconstructs his relationship with the eternal city, choosing not to include in the title «Amor» (Italian word for ‘love’), palindrome of Roma (Italian word for ‘Rome’) and for a long time considered the secret name of the city.

Portoghesi wrote, «throwing a stone in the pond has always been a familiar and liberating gesture for me. The concentric circles that from on the surface of the water have become a  symbolic form in my architecture». This is what was achieved also in these pages: by throwing a stone in the pond of memory the author gives live to a journey that develops through three fundamental dimensions. A more intimate and autobiographical dimension, which includes his sketches, his university teaching activity, institutional assignments, and his most recent activities. The professional dimension, including his defeats and successes, with projects that have remained unfulfilled and others that have been completed such as the Great Mosque, the largest Islamic place of worship in Europe, a few steps from the heart of Christianity. Finally, the dreamlike dimension of an imagined and never realised Rome.
