Designing the variable. Maurizio Sacripanti 1916-1996Lectio magistralis by Paolo Portoghesi

Guido Reni Hall – admittance free subject to availability of places

A lecture examining the architectural work of Sacripanti, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth and the 20th anniversary of his death

he creator of competition projects for the Peugeot Skyscraper in Buenos Aires (1961), the new Opera Theatre in Cagliari (1964-1965) and the Italian Pavilion at the Osaka Expo (1970) – all of which unfortunately remained as designs on paper – Maurizio Sacripanti, one of the 20th century Italian architects most open to research and experimentation, whose thinking was constantly enriched by debate with artists, writers and scientists, was an undoubtedly complex figure who through his architecture proved able to prefigure the variable, the evolution of forms and the passing of time. Today, thanks to this complexity and the critical distance that has by now been achieved, the work of Maurizio Sacripanti can and should be the object of a reappraisal as necessary as it is deserved.
In order to favour new studies and critical contributions, the lecture by Paolo Portoghesiwill be preceded by the presentation of an initiative promoted by AAA/Italia, the Association of Contemporary Architecture Archives, designed to encourage research into Sacripanti’s architecture, projects and writings based on the archive materials to be found at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca and at MAXXI, the two institutions where the Sacripanti Archive is currently housed.
