What is the meaning of painting? How has the concept of painting changed over the centuries? And what will painting become in the future?

How does it manifest, or instead, what are the characteristics of a form of expression – painting – that bring together, despite the vagaries of history, the arts and graffiti of Lascaux, of Piero Della Francesca, of Courbet, of Picasso and Edvard Munch, Richard Gerstl, Bonnard, Balthus, Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud? Ruggero Savinio discusses his intimate relationship with the painters he considers as masters.

All this painting, from the prehistoric dawning to our present, has something in common: physicality – the substance of which picture is composed, but also the action of the painter. Painting is, therefore, a physical matter. This could be the first, essential and conclusive characteristic of what we may continue to call painting.
