Spazio D, MAXXI

From March 6 to March 26, 2013 the exhibition FLY TO BAKU will take place in Rome at MAXXI – Spazio D, organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation with the support of the Rome Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
21 artists from three generations of Azerbaijani will display 100 works of art, ranging from traditional to contemporary, the greater part of which was realized expressly for this exhibition. Paintings, sculptures, installations, video art, photographs and performances for the most important event representing the new and promising contemporary artistic panorama of Azerbaijan.
The goal of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation is to support and promote Azerbaijani culture while offering humanitarian aid at home and abroad. Thanks to this project recently presented with success in London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow and heading for Vienna after Rome, the Foundation sponsors cultural exchange with the contemporary European art scene, while, at the same time, creating an international platform for Azerbaijani artists.
Vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder of the Baku Magazine, Leyla Aliyeva affirms: “My country has been experiencing an unprecedented period of development, and this is more distinctly seen in the area of modern art, a field which has always interested me passionately…. Although the awakening to contemporary art is today the focal point of this exhibition, in our country, we have a long history of creativity and artistic endeavour.” Indeed, the destiny of Azerbaijan is poised between East and West in many sectors, from politics to economics, and, obviously, culture. Azerbaijan today has recovered and consolidated its independence and is ready to show the world its characteristic and original style in numerous fields of art.
