The artists Stefano Arienti and Cesare Pietroiusti will be presenting at MAXXI Disponibilità della cosa (The availability of the thing), a project in which they reflect on the themes of the authorship and the value of works of art.
Initiated in 2008 with the launch of the first collection of banknotes at MAMbo – Museum of Modern Art of Bologna – Disponibilità della cosa received its first sculptural configuration from Stefano Arienti that year when he used 113 banknotes collected during a performance by the two artists at the museum in Bologna in which the work is exhibited.
With their project, Stefano Arienti and Cesare Pietroiusti have tackled a number of the issues that concern contemporary art museums and their reciprocal research. This experimental work, which unites the practices peculiar to each artist, creates brand new and at times paradoxical implications concerning public participation, the value of the work of art, its distribution and its conservation.
The growth of the sculpture, which is currently composed of over 150 pieces, has been ensured over the years by further banknote collections. The work therefore modifies over time through the increase in money made available by the contributors, but may also transform in its physical extension and configuration at any moment at the exclusive discretion of the artists and only through the hand of Stefano Arienti.
During the encounter at MAXXI B.A.S.E. a further banknote collection will be promoted, initiating the process that will lead to the sale of the sculpture and determine the value of the work of art in commercial terms. Once the sale has been completed, as well as the sum invested contributors will have the right to claim a share of the profits obtained and in any case will be entitled to the restitution of the money donated via the procedures detailed in the contract.
Means of participation Profit sharing agreement
Those who wish to participate in the project may do so during the performances at MAXXI B.A.S.E. or by contacting Uliana Zanetti at MAMBo uliana.zanetti@comune.bologna.it), fixing an appoint for the exchange: for every €50 banknote consigned a contract is issued together with a certificate of assignment drafted by the artists together with the lawyer Paolo Bergmann that define an agreement between the contributor and the artists regarding the sharing of any profits deriving from the sale of the work. The expiry of the three-year contract has been extended by 18 months.
