Four lessons on the great artists who have redesigned and revolutionised art in the last sixty years.
The long-standing relationship between art and moving images characterised the entire ‘900s. The obsession artists have with cinema, which transcends films and embraces the legends, places and rituals of the Star System and the love for films is entirely different. It dates back to Andy Warhol’s Pop Art, and it peaked at the turn of the century. The Nineties saw the birth of a new genre, namely auteur films. New figures, namely film-making artists, established themselves. They are visual artists who enter the production system, win festivals, charm viewers and win the most important prizes in the world of cinema and art (as Steve Mc Queen did with 12 years a slave): the Golden Lion and the Oscar. This meeting will dwell upon the relationship that artists have recently established with cinema and its history, starting from homages and the revisitation of cult films (Douglas Gordon, Pierre Huyghe), through the analysis of grammars and languages (Gianfranco Baruchello, Anri Sala), up to animation (Nathalie Djuberg), musicals (Pipilotti Rist; Ra di Martino) and bio-pics (Julian Schnabel, Basquiat).
Alessandra Mammì, journalist, art historian and curator. She contributes to the D-Repubblica and L’Espresso weekly publications. Moreover, she curates the ART/TREVI exposition on the relationship between art and cinema for the Cineteca Nazionale (Italian film library).
