On the occasion of the Pat O’Neill focus, MAXXI is celebrating the work of one of the pioneers of experimental film with a seminar exploring his long and multi-faceted career.

The artistic career of Pat O’Neill, considered to be one of the pioneers and icons of American experimental film from the early Sixties, consists of wide ranging research in the visual arts including sculpture, collage, drawing and photography.

His works, on show at the museum through to 1 December, can be found in prestigious museum collections such as those of: Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

With his work, O’Neill has shown us an alternative to the imaginaries created using post-production techniques, taking an avant-garde approach to subjects otherwise ignored by the mainstream film industry. Themes such as ecology, sustainability in the use of energy, the analysis of social relations, the transformations of bodies and their representation have accompanied, since the 1960s, O’Neill’s obsession with producing grotesque but at the same time poetic and ironic images that still today, in the midst of the digital age, are extremely topical.
