MAXXI’s hottest season is up and running!
Throughout the summer and on the occasion of the exhibitions African Metropolis. An imaginary city and road to justice, you’ll find a rich calendar of events.

We begin with literature: a series of encounters with African writers, starting with Alain Mabankou, born in Congo, winner of the Premio Strega Europeo in 2015, and continuing with Yewande Omotoso, a writer of Nigerian origins living in South Africa, in a dialogue with Paolo Di Paolo on issues such as apartheid, reconciliation and the future of the country, and then Margo Jefferson, Pulitzer Prize winner in 1995, author of Negroland, an autobiography in which she describes the African American middle class, integration and civil rights, in a dialogue with Mario Calabresi, editor of Repubblica.
We proceeed with art and architecture: the artist of South African origins, Kendell Geers, whose work T.W. Batons, (Circle) is on show in road to justice, is the protagonist in a talk with the artistic director Hou Hanru. Three architects – David Adjaye, from Ghana, Mokena Makeka and Jo Noero, both from South Africa, will draw on their own experiences to describe how the African continent is acting as the spokesperson for ethical and innovative design.
Three choreographers present three performances that reflect the variety and the beauty of African dance : a first appointment with the choreography of Nelisiwe Xaba, from South Africa, followed by those of Koffi Koko, from Benin, and Draman and Konate, from Mali.
And last but not least, film, with two seasons, the first dedicated to contemporary Iran, starting with the fresh and personal visions of the Iranian filmmakers Narges Abyar, Rakshan Bani Etemad and Ida Panahandeh and a second on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela: the Italian previews of the film An Act of Defiance by Jean van de Velde and the documentary Mandela by Angus Gibson and Jo Menell. The series concludes with A World Apart by Chris Menges, the winner of the Special Grand Prize of the Jury at the 41st Cannes Film Festival.
After the August break the programme will restart in September.
