CINEMA at MAXXI

27 January – 7 April 2016
curated by Mario Sesti

A film club that’s also a festival with exclusive, authoritative programmes where you can meet cult directors of the big screen: CINEMA at MAXXI, the programme that has caught the attention of tens of thousands of people over the previous seasons, is this year again presenting film in all its myriad aspects, confirming that the seventh art may become a vital part of the activities of a museum devoted to contemporary creativity.

The proposals for this edition

EXTRA major previews
Prestigious previews of the most significant productions from the leading distributors of all forms of cinema, for the most part in the original language with subtitles. A glittering programme of eagerly awaited films, auteur works, inventions and surprises: to all intents and purposes a festival.

TRIBUTES excellence to the fore
Pippo Delbono and Amos Gitai: two filmmakers capable of working on the cusp of the documentary and autobiographical experience, the vision of a world wracked by violence, insanity and war and a love of the language of bodies and representation, of landscapes and of the word. Together with these two creators of signs and narrations in the form of film, MAXXI and Fondazione Cinema are devoting to Marcello Mastroianni, on the 20th anniversary of his death, a memorial curated in collaboration with the capital’s two most interesting associations of young film enthusiasts: the Piccolo Cinema America and Image Hunters/Rome Creative Contest.

MASTERCLASS face to face with the protagonists
Francesca Archibugi, Matteo Garrone, Radu Mihăileanu, together with Sergio CastellittoRocco Papaleo and Franco Battiato (who will be presenting a first preview of his short made at the school run by Marco Bellocchio) will be meeting the public for conversations and screenings. Meetings with leading directors and actors has become a major feature of the MAXXI auditorium programming, but in this season, with the events being filmed and which will also be attended by professional figures and students, the educational and cultural aspects of the conversation/lecture format will be reinforced.

ALICE FAMILY the best of children’s film
In collaboration with Alice nella città, a programme of titles for the very young – or for adults accompanied by children – that explores the finest children’s from all over the world. A classic feature of Cinema at MAXXI.
