Superstudio
A group of avant-garde architects (1966-1986), composed of Adolfo Natalini, Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, Roberto Magris, Gian Piero Frassinelli and Alessandro Magris, (with Alessandro Poli from 1970 to 1972). The group was one of the initiators of so-called “Radical Architecture” and successively involved in an attempt to develop an anthropological re-foundation of architecture.
Superstudio’s critical work was developed in such theoretical projects as The Single Design, Histograms, A Catalogue of Villas, The Continuous Monument, The Twelve Ideal Cities – all dystopic stories – and the film series Fundamental Acts: Life, Education, Ceremony, Love, Death. Exhibitions include: “Italy: the New Domestic Landscape”, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1972, “Mindscapes, Sottsass & Superstudio” Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and six other American museums, 1973, “Superstudio Fragmente aus einem personlichen Museum”, Graz, Vienna, Innsbruck, 1973, “Metaphors and Allegories/ Superstudio” Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 1982, “Superstudio 1966-82”, Florence, 1982, in addition to various participations at the Biennale di Venezia, Triennale di Milano, important exhibitions of design and Radical Architecture, from 1966 to the present.
The work of Superstudio can be found in the collections of such museums as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main, the FRAC Centre, Orleans and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. In 2001, the Archivio Superstudio was founded in Florence to manage exhibitions and publications.
