Back in 1977 the Musée national d’art modern Centre Pompidou in Paris was inaugurating an innovative exhibition programme devoted to international culture. Within this highly unusual working context, Germano Celant was invited to organize an exhibition on Italian art: Identité italienne (1981). From post-informal research to approaches to Pop through to Arte Povera and concluding with the successive generation: a successful attempt at portraying the Italian identity.

Germano Celant is the director of the Fondazione Prada, curator of the Fondazione Aldo Rossi and curator of the Fondazione Emilio and Annabianca Vedova. The technical director for Art and Architecture at the Milan Triennale, he was the Senior Curator for contemporary art at the Guggenheim Museum of New York (1989-2008). He is internationally known for his theorising of Arte Povera and in 1987 he received the Frank Jewett Mather Award. A contributing editor with Artforum and Interview, Celant also contributes to the weekly L’Espresso. His numerous publications include: Tornado Americano. Arte al potere 1949-2008.
