A photographic exhibition born out of a UNICEF project financed by the Italian government that involved equipping a selected group of young people, the victims of war and survivors of acts of gender violence, with an expressive tool and an introduction to the world of work through a workshop on photographic techniques.
A step towards rebirth, overcoming pain, war and displacement
In the month of August 2014, over 400,000 members of the Yazidi community were forced to abandon their homes while Daesh conquered and devastated broad swathes of Iraqi territory. Many of them were taken prisoner and executed, thousands of women and children were reduced to slavery. Those who managed to escape sought refuge in the Sinjar mountains before reaching the refugee camps in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.
The Khanke refugee camp – the subject of the photographs and home to the young women who took them – houses almost 3,000 families who fled from the Iraqi province of Nineveh. Despite the trauma and the horrors it witnessed, the Yazidi community has displayed a stubborn capacity to react to which this photographic exhibition provides touching testimony.
