Emergency’s Paediatric Centre In Port Sudan Supported by MAXXI by Massimo Grimaldi

Saturday 6 October 2012, 19.00
Piazza del MAXXI – free admittance

In 2009 Massimo Grimaldi’s work Emergency’s Paediatric Centre in Port Sudan Supported by MAXXI, won the MAXXIduepercento competition promoted thanks to Italian legislation No. 717/49 which reserves part of the budget for new public buildings for the realization of works of art.

The artist has devolved these funds to the construction of a paediatric hospital run by Emergency in Sudan. The various stages in its construction and operation become the work: a photographic reportage projected onto one of MAXXI’s external walls. Emergency’s paediatric centre in Port Sudan began treating patients on the 26th of December last year.

On the occasion of the VIII Day of the Contemporary, this work will be the protagonist in a workshop organized by the MAXXI Education Department that will involve whole families in an event/encounter.
The project involves the Education Department collecting drawings donated by the children of Rome to those of Port Sudan that will be used to decorate a wall in the hospital specially prepared to display them.
At the end of their stay, every child discharged from the hospital will be invited to take down one of the drawings by the children from Rome and take it home with them. The drawings will be topped up periodically thanks to the active collaboration of the artist and Emergency. Grimaldi’s work will thus succeed in establishing a continuous dialogue between Port Sudan and the urban space of Rome.

Saturday 6 October from 19.00 to 22.00, the children and their families are invited to come to the museum to deliver their drawings, see the projection and listen to the ‘story’ of the project, welcomed by Massimo Grimaldi, the museum’s Education Department staff and Cecilia Strada, President of Emergency.
