Jonas, Joan

Joan Jonas (New York, 1936) is one of the most significant artists on the international scene. Through continual research into the relationships  between the different creative idioms, the American artist creates works in which experience and personal memories, mythology, dance, the everyday and history combine in an experimental and innovative vocabulary. After having expressed herself through sculpture, since 1968 the artist has principally focussed on performance and video art, investigating the relationship between the body and its representation.  Joan Jonas’s curriculum includes exhibitions at the University Art Museum, Berkeley, California (1983), the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1994), the Stadtsgalerie, Stuttgart (2000), Documenta 11, Kassel (2002), the Queens Museum of Art, New York (2004), the Castello di Rivoli, Turin (2006), the Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona (2007) and the Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva (2008).
