A talk devoted to the great Russian director on the occasion of the presentation of the book Sergei Eisenstein and the Anthropology of Rhythm

On opening the archive of Sergej Ėjzenštejn we are faced with monumental complexity that challenges our categories and our habitual ways of seeing. A series of documents, in particular their formal and technical details, have tested our historical and political imagination. The book Sergei Eisenstein and the Anthropology of Rhythm by Marie RebecchiElena Vogman and Till Gathmann, (NERO, 2017) – published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Fondazione Nomas – presents a re-editing of documents from the director’s archives in Moscow, thus opening up their potential relationships with the present.

Following the talk there will be discussion with the artist Clemens von Wedemeyer regarding archive re-editing, focussing in particular on the role of extras as element of both cinematic and historical representation.
