The lives of two women through fragments of their experiences
In the video installation Indifference by the artist Nicola Brandt, the stories are narrated through a monumental triptych that represents the coastline and the inland areas of the Namib desert. These decrepit landscapes with their deceptive beauty conceal a number of places stained by a history of violence.
Nicola Brandt, originally from Namibia but born into a German family, discusses together with the German art historian Elisa Schaar how the legacy of the colonial war between Germany and the Herero and Nama African peoples (1904-1908) has left traces in the present. The work focuses on the role of photography, the moving image and the landscape in mnemonic processes and the capacity for new documentary practices to provide a subtle criticism of these interconnected stories and their contemporary perception.
