The relationship between art and the natural landscape in the history of some of the world’s leading contemporary art initiatives
Whether they are the result of private collecting or conceived specifically as public spaces, these areas are true open air museums or expansive art initiatives, with a special concern for the relationship between art, architecture and nature. In these spaces, the works have special a relationship with the nature that surrounds them and interact between themselves in new and unexpected ways: a form of experimentation that over the years has acquired increasing importance.
In the final lecture in this year’s Histories of Art, Akiko Miki, former senior and chief curator at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and currently International Artistic Director of Benesse Art Site Naoshima, will be talking to us about this project developed for the past 30 years on three Japanese islands, founded with the intention of creating new and evocative spaces, bringing contemporary art and architecture into contact with the natural environement of the Seto Inland Sea, a landscape with a rich cultural and historical fabric.
Through the relationship between art and nature, visitors to the site are invited to reflect on the meaning of the word Benesse,or “Well-Being”. All of the ongoing activities aspire to promote a relationship of reciprocal growth between art and the region, with the objective of making a positive contribution to the local communities.
