A film by Yasujiro Ozu,
Japan, 1934, 86’
Starring Takeshi Sakamoto, Choko Lida, Koij (Hideo) Mitsui
With live accompaniment by the orchestra of the Istituto Boccherini, Lucca

One of Ozu’s first great successes (he was to make a sound version in 1959), with photography by the great Hideo Mohara (Rashomon),this is one of the films with which Ozu found his voice: the family as source of warmth and pain, the concentration of space into a few elliptical scenes of masterful composition, tenderness as the collateral effect of pain. The film, screened in Italy for the first time, will be accompanied by an ensemble from the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali Luigi Boccherini of Lucca.
